Earworms! And also, Star Trek.

Spoiler free review of Star Trek: IT WAS AWESOME. I don't care if you've never seen Star Trek, I don't care if you're disenchanted with the franchise, I don't care if you thought Cloverfield was the shittiest movie ever; if you're a fan of sci-fi and of things that are hilarious, GO SEE IT. ♥

And now, I attempt to invent a meme!

The Earworm Meme

Post five songs that are stuck in your head and get stuck in your head a lot. Chances are that they're stuck in someone else's head too, and now they can have their own copy of the song. Or, alternatively, they can now be exposed to new earworms to kick out the ones that are already in there. Thus as more and more people post this meme in their journal, we can create an endless chain of enjoyable, catchy songs.

1. The Boy Does Nothing - Alesha Dixon
I never claimed not to have a weakness for catchy, catchy pop. I groove to this one all the time.

2. Fever - Peggy Lee
Classic lounge jazz, as sexy and smooth as... well, I don't know enough about cocktails to make a proper analogy. But it's good.

3. Einsamkeit - Hiroki Yasutomo
Yes, I have become a Hetalia fan. And yes, Germany is a total not-so-secret woob.

4. Viva La Vida - Coldplay
I was always kinda neutral on Coldplay before, but I find I can't get enough of their latest album, and of this song in particular. I just wish I knew what it was about.

5. Let It Rock - Kevin Rudolf
I dunno how the heck to classify this song, I just know that it is one of the best songs ever to do a paso doble to. (It's sad how many of my current favorite songs I was exposed to through Dancing With the Stars).

I never get tired of this one.

The Rules:
1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

[info]swordage gave me a W, here's what I came up with after I narrowed ~275 down to 5.

1. "Waiting in Vain" - Annie Lennox
From the very first time I rest my eyes on you, boy
My heart said follow through
But I know now that I'm way down on your line
But the waiting feeling's fine

Annie Lennox has to be one of my favorite vocalists of all time, and in covering the late Bob Marley she brings a new layer of emotionality to an already emotional song.

2. "We Can Hear Your Pulse" - Origa
You might know Origa as the Russian artist who sings "Inner Universe" and "Rise" from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the former of which is probably one of my favorite songs, ever. Sadly, the Internet has been rather unhelpful in finding me other songs by her, but it did turn up this one, haunting and simple with the centerpiece of Origa's one-of-a-kind vocals.

3. "Welcome Home" - Coheed & Cambria
This song will no doubt be familiar to players of Rock Band, and to anyone who's seen the trailer for "9" (and if you haven't, go, watch it, watch it now, go, go go go). I'm still not entirely sold on the vocals, but the first minute and last minute of the song alone make it all worthwhile.

4. "When the World Ends [Oakenfold Remix]" - Dave Matthews Band
When the world ends, collect your things, you're coming with me
When the world ends, you tuckle up yourself with me
Watchin' as the stars disappear to nothing
The day the world is over, oh, we'll be lying in bed

If you've heard the original version of the song, well, this one is quite a bit different and, I think, much more suiting of the apocalyptic lyrics. Mmm, sexy sexy techno.

5. "Wild Horses" - The Sundays
I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

No disrespect to Mick and the boys, but this is my favorite version of the song that I've heard. Just beautiful.

Took my Japanese final today! Wham, bam, thank you ma'am! Then I went home and slept for five hours. :Db Went out with a bunch of really fun people afterwards, for bowling and dinner and Christmas-decorated downtown. It was a lot of fun! I think my dinner didn't agree with me, though. Oog.

A meme!

Put your MP3 player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.

SPEAK~

kiss a cop, goin' downtown
you live in a house of mirrors
suddenly something has happened to me
this is a total bloody disaster
I look at you, see all the love there that's sleeping

I hold you in my arms as the band plays
you had the best but you gave her up
I like to watch you sleep at night
now we pledge ourselves to hold this barricade
in the quickness of our haste

Well the morning was wrapped in a blanket of clouds
buddy, you're a boy make a big noise
I took my love, took it down
I feel you, the sun that shines
we are takin' it eay, bright and breezy yeah

You think you can have both of them
look at me, I'm gorgeous in my housecoat with my coffee cup
I know you so better than the city in my rear view
sunny morning, you can hear it, siren's warning
at the end of the day you're another day older

That... could be worse! XD

~~~~
It's the end of the quarter, and I have sernioritis like whoa. I have a lot that needs doing, but when I come home every day all I wanna do is flop down and do nothing. XP Any advce? Other than just 'suck it up and do it, ya whiny brat'. ^^;
So, what's up with you today? :D
Here, have some numbers!
142 - number of pounds I weigh with my clothes and shoes on, according to the scale in the lobby of the Washington Mutual near here.
176 - number of pounds I weigh when I'm also wearing my work backpack and holding my work laptop and carrying my purse.
6.1 - number of miles my pedometer informs me I walked today, at least half of which was walked wihle carrying aforementioned backpack, laptop and purse
1,500 - approximate number of wildfires currently burning in my home state, caused by a varying combination of drought, lightning, and human idiocy
2 - number of people who asked me this morning if my family was all right, before which point I hadn't even realized my home state was on fire (they're fine, by the way.)
6 - ways from Sunday in which my state is screwed. :-/
Also, it seems Pandora.com is trying to develop a sense of humor: I was in the middle of Gchatting with [info]lunapome about the wildfires when I realized that the last three songs that had been played were Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood", Sting's "After the Rain Has Fallen", and Genesis' "Land of Confusion" (but I can see the fires still alight / burning into the night). And then 2 songs later, "Electrical Storm" by U2. Classy, Pandora. Classy.
Okay, so that's math ut of the way -- on to literature!
"The Big Read (http://www.neabigread.org) reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed."
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Strike out the books you have no intention of ever reading, or were forced to read at school and hated.
5) Reprint this list in your own LJ
I've also italicized those books which I started or have read parts of but have yet to finish. I do that with depressing regularity.
Also, it seems a bit unfair to me that The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is listed separately from the rest of the Chronicles of Narnia, but His Dark Materials and Harry Potter get only a mention each. Ah well.
My list )
In all, that's 20 out of 100 that I've read in their entirety, and if you count all 7 Harry Potter books and all 3 His Dark Materials installments, that bumps the total up to 28. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself (even if 9 of those 20 books I read for a class. Ssshhh!)
Edit: Currently iTunes is palying: "Blaze (Take 2)" from Escaflowne.
*facepalm* It's spreading.
Meme ganked from [info]chikkiboo:
You know how sometimes people on your friends list post about stuff going on in their lives, and all of a sudden you think, "Wait a minute? Since when are they working THERE? Since when are they dating HIM/HER? since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you should already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.
Please copy the queries/statements below, erase the existing answers and put your own in their places, and then post the result in your journal. Please elaborate on the questions which would benefit from elaboration. One-word-answers seldom help anyone out.
And that's all!
Started playing Tales of the Abyss today! First impressions: Luke is a dork. ...That's pretty much it, so far. XD But I'm cool with it: I seem to be unable to resist games wherein the main character is a huge dork. Or at least huge dorks voiced by Yuri Lowenthal.
[info]ladysisyphus gave me R, so, here we go.
"Red Helmet's Extermination" - Masami Ueda
Okami is a fabulous game, with fabulous music, and if you have a PS2 or a Wii and enjoy Zelda-type RPGs, originality and creativity, and/or Japanese folklore, then you owe it to yourself to play this game, because there is absolutely nothing else like it. This is the theme from one of the major boss fights.
"Running One" - Tykwer, Klimek & Heil
I saw "Lola Rennt" / "Run Lola, Run" years and years ago, and very much enjoyed it (and have since inflicted it on my family as well). It's a really cool, original film with a techno soundtrack as only the Germans can do it. And if you've seen JJ Abram's "Alias", then watching it'll probably make you go, "hey..."
"Ring" - Yoko Kanno
Back n eight grade, when I was jsut starting to get into anime, my friends showed me a six episode OVA called "Please Save my Earth". The anime hasn't really stuck with me, but some of the music has. Very evocative and kind of ethereal.
"Red Right Hand" - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
[info]laylah sent this to me as a song for Kimberly from FMA, years ago. As you can see, the focus has shifted somewhat, but it's still an awesome song all around. (It was used in 'Hellboy', too, which just serves as proof that that movie rocks).
"Rose and Release" - Masami Okui
The ending theme for the final episode of Utena. I tear up every time I listen to this (more for its context than the song itself, but still). I love that show.
Feel free to take any / all of these; if any of the links fail you, let me know.
Also, I have a new haircut!
back here )
The only downside of short haircuts like these is that they remind me just how much I resemble my brothers. XP
I'm gonna take a leaf out of [info]shadawyn's and [info]sigelphoenix's books and do that 5 Good Things Meme. I don't know if I'll be doing it every day, but days like this (when I've got no really good reason to be sad and plenty of good reasons not to be!) it seems needed.
5 Good Things About Today
1. I finished my finals! I took my law test (which I think I did okay on! Not great, but okay!) and turned in my papers, so all my schoolwork for spring quarter is over and done with!
2. I had lunch with Kat today, which was very nice because she leaves tomorrow and I won't see her again till I go home for a couple weeks in August. And she doesn't read LJ, so I can by very smooshy and say that I'm really really proud of her for making it through her freshman year with such flying colors. ♥ It's really made me happy watching her settle in and grow here. Lunch's goodness was compounded by the fact that we went to an Indian restaurant I'd been meaning to try for a while now, and I had some reall delicious chicken tikka masala to eat. I even got to take the leftover sauce home with me and dipped my dinner in it and it was very tasty. ♥
3. [info]rivendellrose wrote me birthday fic! :D Doctor Who / Pirates of the Caribbean; Daleks, Davey Jones and unrepentant crack, cos it's what I asked for and she is good to me. <3 (spoilers for 3rd season).
4. I got to see people tonight! There was hanging out and playing Rock Band and even an impromptu outing for bubble tea (or frozen yogurt, in my case). I have such great friends. I really need to remind myself of that more often.
5. Now that schoolwork is out of the way, I've started working on my app for [info]campfuckudie. I'm actually pretty excited about it! Now I just hope my app gets accepted... I really have no idea if it will or not. ^^; We'll see, I guess...
Jungian Personality Test
08:08am 05/06/2008
redbird
My personality type: the engaged idealist. Take the free iPersonic personality test!
The engaged idealist is an extroverted, helpful personality. Others find him to be very congenial and inspiring - especially as he is always willing to see the best in the other person. His humour, his energy and his optimism attract other people. The engaged idealist is very good at communicating and is good at convincing and firing on others. That is why it is a matter of course that he often takes over the leading role in groups. This personality type often produces very charismatic persons.
The engaged idealist has an unusually strong ability to empathise. He is tolerant and generous towards others; he sometimes tends to idealise his friends. He always tries to suit everybody and wants his relationships to be harmonious and satisfactory. To achieve this, he is prepared to invest a great deal and to put his requirements last. As the engaged idealist is very considerate, there is the danger of him sacrificing and overexerting himself for others. In his job, he therefore has to be very careful not to develop a burnout syndrome.
The engaged idealist is reliable, well organised and loves structuring complicated situations. He has difficulty accepting criticism; he quickly feels hurt and misunderstood. His perfectionism also influences his love life - he looks for the perfect relationship for life. Once he has made his decision, he is a faithful, well-balanced and loving partner. However, should he get involved with the wrong person, it can happen that he allows himself to be exploited for a long time before he ends the relationship.
I... I'd say that sounds about right. Espcially that second paragraph, good God O_O
Also -- BAHAHA. [info]casaval, [info]niwatorimegami, I think we all need this shirt.
waaaah, don't wanna go turn in my rough draft. ;_; hate peer reviews...
